Low-Emitting Materials: Paints and Coatings

Paints and coatings cannot exceed VOC standards set by Green Seal GS-11, GS-03 and SCAQMD (calculate by number of coats)

PTS 1

Interior paints and coating applied on-site must meet the limitiations and restrictions concerning chemical components set by the following standards:

  1. Topcoat Paints: Green Seal Standard GS-11
  2. Anti-Corrosive and Anti-Rust Paits: Green Seal Standard GS-03, Anti-Corrosive Paints
  3. All Other Architectural Coatings, Primers and Undercoats: SCAQMD Rule 1113, Architectural Coatings.

If the project is forced to use small quantities of non-complying paints, a ___________ can be calculated to demonstrate that the overall average VOC of all products is below the allowed limit by category.

VOC Budget
The Green Seal standard for low-VOC paints states "The calculation of  VOC shall exclude ___ and ____ added at the point of sale.
water and tinting color
Anti-corrosive Paints
are coatings formulated and recommended for use in preventing the corrosion of ferrous metal substrates

Paints

are liquid, liquefiable or mastic composition that is converted to a solid protective, decorative, or functional adherent film after application as a thin layer.  These coatings are intended for on-site application to interior and exterior surfaces of residentail, commericial, institutional or industrial buildings.
Flat Coatings
are coatings that register a gloss of less that 15 on an 85 degree meter or less than 5 on a 60-degree meter.
Non-flat coatings
are coatings that register a gloss of 5 or greater on a 60 degree meter and a gloss of 15 or great on 85 degree meter.
primer
is a material applied to a substrate to improve adhesion of subsequently applied adhesive
